As the English actress and writer Jo Brand used to say, “Anything is good if it’s made of chocolate.” And what could be better than a Chocolate Lava Cake? That smooth chocolate core flowing out slowly, sensuously as you cut through the cake layer, pooling around the cake and spilling out onto the plate…
But wait, hang on, why is the core yellow? Richly creamy and savoury to the tongue, the warm saltiness of the salted egg core cut through the bitter sweet chocolate to meld romantically on the palate. Stunned, Dex and I oooh-ed and ahh-ed over the wondrous velvety smooth salted egg yolk custard.
Who would have thought that something typically found as an accompaniment to humble fare such as Teochew Muay, can star so confidently and lusciously in a western dessert?
Indeed, Dex and I gave our virgin trial of the Salted Egg Chocolate Lava Cake to Five & Dime located along River Valley Road with a huge nod of approval. Unlike the usual Lava Cakes, the lava core was a smooth blend of salted egg yolk that lent a warm but pleasant surprise. A little like salted caramel maybe, but oh so delicious!
Oh, and did I mention photogenic? Dex and I got so excited over the Salted Egg Chocolate Lava Cake that we actually took a video as Dex cut slowly into the cake layer while i gushed over the luscious oozing salted egg lava.
Despite having had an incredibly full lunch of Salted Egg Yolk Pork Ribs with Rice, we still found it yummylicious enough to polish off the entire Salted Egg Chocolate Lava Cake. Oops, whatever happened to diet plans?! No worries, that’s what friends are for – to share the calories! As with all foods, enjoy in moderation.
